“We are happy to risk our lives to get that reward of rescuing a child”

In the latest episode of her Better Angels podcast, 国产视频 President Sarah Brown talks about heroes - to聽Raed al Saleh of the White Helmets, tragic聽British MP Jo Cox's husband聽Brendan and聽Ebola nurse聽Pauline Cafferkey.


What makes a hero? What drives ordinary people to rush into a building that has been聽bombed, to nurse patients with a deadly disease or to help their community rebuild after a war?

These are the questions asked by 国产视频 President Sarah Brown in the latest episode of her Better Angels聽podcast.

Her guests include聽Raed al Saleh of the White Helmets, the volunteer Syrian civil defence force who have become known across the world for rescuing more than 70,000聽people聽from the rubble.聽

She also speaks to聽Brendan Cox, whose wife Jo was the British MP murdered in June;聽Pauline Cafferkey, the nurse who contracted Ebola in Sierra聽Leone;聽and Ousmane Ba, one of 国产视频国产视频檚 inspiring聽Global Youth Ambassadors.

More than 140 White Helmets have been聽killed carrying out their dangerous duties.

Raed says: 国产视频淲e know that we will be at risk聽but nobody can feel the great feelings that we have when we rescue a child or any civilian.聽

国产视频淭his is the biggest reward for us when we get a person alive. We are always happy to risk our lives in order to get that reward.国产视频

The work of the聽White Helmets was promoted by Jo Cox in the British Parliament. Her husband Brendan tells Sarah: 国产视频淭he thing that impressed Jo so much about the White Helmets was their bravery.聽When other people run away from danger, they run towards it.

国产视频淚n one of the darkest situations imaginable, to have that shining beacon of humanity聽made her hope that something could turn around in Syria.国产视频

Talking about her work in Sierra Leone during the Ebola outbreak that killed more than 11,000 people,聽Pauline Cafferkey says: 国产视频淎ll of us that went out there to do aid work, we国产视频檙e not like crazy, risk-taking sort of people 国产视频撀爓e国产视频檙e just people that care.
